John (Rufus) Hyatt (Hiatt) shows up in census records with different first
names. Recorded property documents show that Rufus used the name
John after he married Callie (and maybe before). He was 54 and Callie
was 21 or 22 when Rufus (Bill) was born.

Sometime after 1922 and before 1930 Graham Virginia, where this family
lived, became Bluefield Virginia and Bluefield WV. Although records
appear the family moved from Graham to Bluefield it appears they lived in
the same area, had the same store and residence for many years.

John (Rufus) grew up with his dad being a farmer. John (Rufus) was a
merchant that owned his own store. Although he died about 1928 or 1929
his family must have continued having a store. As when his son Rufus
(Bill) came home from WWII in 1945 he lived over their store and saw
Minnie Parker from his window and later married her.

IN 1880 HE WAS LISTED AS A FARMER WITH HIS DAD IN BEECH
MOUNTAIN, WATUGA, NORTH CAROLINA.  IN 1910 HE WAS LISTED IN
THE CENSUS WITH THE FAMILY IN PULASKI VIRGINIA. IN 1920 HE WAS
LISTED AS BEING IN GRAHAM, TAZEWELL, VIRGINIA AS NOTED
ABOVE.
