One of Alexander Ross seventy families which settled on a large tractof land in Shenandoah Valley; removed in 1756 to Gilford Col. NC returned to Va 1760 and settled in Hampshire Co.; then returned to Frederick Co. in 1764 a few months before his death.

John Hiatt, Jr. was born in England and came to America when he was ayoung man. He married Rachel Wilson in Bucks Co., PA and they lived there until about 1728, when the family moved to Chester and LancasterCounties, PA. They were Quakers and members of the Meeting in Chester Co. Around 1732 the family moved to Orange Co., VA, along with other families leaving PA in search of fertile land in the Shenandoah Valley. About 1733 seventy families moved to Frederick Co. VA and foundedHopewell MM. Most of them were from Chester Co., PA or Cecil Co., MD. The family of John Hiatt, Jr. was one of these seventy families. These families established the Hopewell Friend's Meeting in 1734. In 1738, this area became Frederick Co., VA. Rachel died about 1746 and John remarried and eventually moved to Hampshire Co., VA and settled near the village of Middleway. In 1756, at the time of the French and Indian War, John and his family and many other Quaker families moved toNC to avoid the hostilities. (An old pioneer story from a newspaper stated: "Scouts brot news that there was a body of Indians coming toward the fort on Capon, so Hiatt gathered his family and started out in the night." They lived in Rowan Co., near the fast growing settlementof New Garden. This became Guilford Co. in 1770. In 1757 John purchased 632 acres of land on Deep River near the present town of Jamestown. This land was deeded to his three sons, Joseph, George and John in1760. At this time, John moved back to VA and settled near his original home in Hampshire County where he died in 1764. This is present day Jefferson Co., WV. His widow, Margaret, married James Largent by 1767.

John Hiatt left a will naming all of his children except Phebe who was born after his death. It was dated 3 Jan 1764 and probated 4 Dec 1764. His sixteenth child was born posthumously. His oldest child wouldhave been 42 years of age when John died.

Land patents: 25 April 1733, he received warrant number 5 to 200 acres of land situated on Beaver Creek. He apparently did not comply with the conditions of the warrant, for the land was decalred vacant andregranted in 1744. He also held land in Lancaster Co, PA which he sold before moving to Frederick Co. where he was associated with the Pipes Creek Meeting. In Nov 1735, John Hiatt was granted 300 acres. He purchased 200 acres more in 1738.

Time Line: John Hiatt, Jr. was born 3 years after the College of William and Mary was founded in Williamsburg, VA
