Sent By Sylvia Alexander. Elmer died from complications of gall stones. He
was in terrible pain but the hospital kicked him out because he did not have
enough money.
One of Elmer's favorite jokes was when he was traveling on the train. He
lived in Ayr, Neb. One time a lady sitting next to him fell asleep, when she
awoke she asked Elmer if she had passed Ayr (air). Elmer said no she had not
passed air.

Elmer Hiatt was a Rail Road man. He worked for many different R.Roads. Retired
from the C & N.W. R.R. in 1951 after 49 years of service. His work took him
allover the mid west. He was a master mechanic and his last job was Deisel
supervisor between Adams, Wis and minneapolis. He could repair anythin
mechanial. Was a member of the Masonic Lodge at Adams. he aA3 his wife,
Bessie, spent the winter at Harlington, Texas.

Elmer Eugene Hiatt was born in Douglas Township May 22, 1931, He was the
son of Ensil and Edith Phillips Hiatt. He attended elementary grades at the
Scott School. he continued his education at the Moravia High School. On
January 22, 1950, he was united in marriage to Mary Teater at Moravia Methodist
Church. To this union one son was born, Gary Eugene.
Elmer was a farm owner. he also owned and operated Hiatt's Packing Plant.
He lived his entire life in Appanoose County and was a member of the
Wesley Chapel Methodist Church.
He had been in ill health for the past year and was critical this past
month.
He departed this life at the University Hospital in Iowa City January 30,
1970 at the age of 38 years, 8 months, and 8 days.
He is survived by his wife, Mary, his son, Gary and daughter-in-law Debbie,
and granddaughter Marti of Centerville.
His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ensil Hiatt of Rural Centerville. One brother,
Wayne of Las Vegas, Nevada and a sister Norma June Proctor of Cleveland, Ohio.
His sister-in-law Tom Proctor. A host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Elmer was a devoted husband, father and a true friend to everyone who knew
him. Elmer was one who smiled with happiness often and loved much. He had the
respect of all people and especially the love of all children. he will be
remembered for his personality and love of life by all who came in contact with
him day by day, which continued year after year. his life was an inspiration
and his memory to us a benediction.
Funeral services were held Feb. 2 at the First Baptist Church with Rev. C.
Donald Thrash, pastor. offciating, Burial was at the Hanes Cemetery, north of
Centerville. Miller-Wehrie Funeral Home was in charge. Pall Bearers were,
Wilbur and Homer Phillips, Howard and Wendell Phillips, Harold Mishler and Ivyl
Tarbell.

Hiatt - Elwood b. in R.C. Jan 9, 1840. He m. Eliz A. Lundy Feb 22, 1866 they had 9 children 4 sons and 5 dts. He was left an orphan at the age of 16 yrs. Died Sept 23, 1888 ae 46 y 8 m 14 d.
Elwood Hiatt is a farmer, of White River Township, and occupies the old
homestead of his father. He was born in Randolph County January 9, 1840, and
has always been engaged upon the farm. He is a son of Moses and Lavina
(Edwards) Hiatt. His paternal grandfather was Zachariah Hiatt, who moved to
Wayne County, Ind., in 1813, and soon afterwards to Randolph Co., and was among the first settlers. His maternal grandfather was Jonathan Edwards Dr., who was a native of North Carolina, and an early settler in Randolph County. Elwood was married February 22, 1866, to Miss Elizabeth A. Ludy, daughter of Henry Ludy, and a native of Randolph County. Mrs. Hiatt was born May 27, 1842. Mr. and Mrs. Hiatt were educated in the common schools. They have eight children, viz: Charles L., born December 16, 1866; Emma D., August 7, 1868, Mary E., September 21, 1870; Anna C., September 15, 1872; Minnie M., November 23, 1874, George W., August 18, 1876; Cora M., September 24, 1878; and Garfield January 13, 1881.
Mr. and Mrs. Hiatt with their little family group, now occupy their pleasant country home of 194 acres of fertile lands in the enjoyment of all there is in life. They are widely known, and are highly esteemed by all who know them. Mr. Hiatt's father died July 1, 1856 aged fifty-two years and twenty-two days.
